Casualty boss steps down from role after three years on the soap

"I have decided it's time to lay down my scalpel."

Casualty boss Loretta Preece has confirmed she has stepped down as series producer after three years.

Preece, who has been on the soap since 2019, also revealed that she will be staying at BBC Studios in a new role.

Writing on LinkedIn, the producer said: "After nearly three very happy years at the helm of #Casualty I have decided its time to lay down my scalpel.

"It is a wonderful show bursting with talented and genuine people and it has been my privilege to work alongside them representing the #nhs during this extraordinary covid period.

"There are many storylines and episodes that I am enormously proud of but putting #covid on screen in a way that attracted praise from medics will stay in my memory forever."

Preece added: "Happily I'm staying at #bbcstudios and I'm very excited about my new role."

It comes after it was confirmed last year that Jon Sen would be leaving EastEnders as executive producer and would oversee Casualty, with his role reported to have started in December.

"The time has come to bid my farewell to Walford," he said at the time. "It has been the honour of a lifetime to helm this amazing show for three years.

"I want to give a heartfelt thanks to Kate [Oates] and rest of the wonderful team at Elstree for the brilliant work we've achieved together. I wish Chris [Clenshaw] every success in his new role."

During her time at Casualty, Preece oversaw a number of major storylines, including the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well Jacob (Charles Venn) and Tina's (Adele James) abuse storyline and the series' 35th anniversary.
