Casualty bosses speak out on show future as Holby City ends

Holby City started off as a spin-off of Casualty and now, 23 years later, it has come to an end, giving fans a powerful and emotional send-off on Tuesday (March 29).

The cast have shared some poignant goodbye messages and photos to social media, while the BBC posted a behind-the-scenes video and a 'best of' compilation.

Now, Casualty bosses have put out a message commemorating the end of Holby, and promising to keep the fire burning in memory of the drama.

"It breaks out hearts that our beloved sister show, Holby City, had ended tonight," the message reads.

"For twenty years we have loved our hospital with our friends in Elstree. Like many of the British public we have laughed, cried and been thoroughly entertained by the great characters of Keller, Darwin and beyond.

"We will miss you Holby City and we pay tribute to our many great colleagues who have poured their hearts into the success of your show.

"We are proud to keep the Holby City flag flying and promise to keep telling heart wrenching, urgent and entertaining stories for the sake of both shows."

Although this is no doubt comforting to hear, plenty of people aren't chuffed that Holby has ended in the first place. Jac Naylor actress Rosie Marcel recently said: "However, I can't lie and say that I wasn't angry about Holby ending without warning, without reprieve, or the opportunity to fight.

"For this to happen at a time when we were outperforming our sister shows and EastEnders, it felt like a very big blow to all of us, and it still does."

The only reason the BBC has given for the show's cancellation was when it announced it last year, stating: "We sometimes have to make difficult decisions to make room for new opportunities and as part of the BBC's commitment to make more programmes across the UK, we have taken the difficult decision to bring the show to a close in order to reshape the BBC's drama slate to better reflect, represent and serve all parts of the country."
